Quick Answer
Zakat on gold is 2.5% of the current market value of your gold (adjusted for karat purity), provided total zakatable wealth has been above the Nisab (85g gold) for one full lunar year. Formula: Value = Weight × Purity × Price per gram; Zakat = Value × 2.5%.
What Is a Zakat on Gold & Silver?
Zakat on gold is one of the most commonly owed forms of Zakat, since gold jewellery is widely held as a store of wealth in Muslim households. The obligation applies to gold held above the Nisab threshold for at least one complete lunar year (Hawl).
Two nuances: first, account for karat purity — 22k gold is 91.67% pure, 21k is 87.5%, 18k is 75%. Zakat is on the actual gold content, not gross weight. Second, value the gold at current market price on the day of calculation, not the price you paid.
The Nisab is approximately 85 grams of pure gold. The 2.5% rate is from Hadith: 'For every 20 dinars (gold), half a dinar is due' (Abu Dawud 1563).

The Formula Explained
Purity = Karat ÷ 24 (e.g. 22k = 22/24 = 0.9167)Value = Weight (g) × Purity × Price per gramZakat = Value × 2.5% (if total wealth ≥ Nisab of 85g gold)Example: 100g of 22k gold at PKR 20,000/gram
- Purity = 22/24 = 0.9167
- Value = 100 × 0.9167 × 20,000 = PKR 1,833,400
- Zakat = 1,833,400 × 2.5% = PKR 45,835
